IET Plenary Session

Day 1 - Tuesday 26th May

PLENARY SESSION:
21st Century Grids - A Realistic Revolution?

14:00 – 17:30 - Room D

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) will be providing a dedicated plenary session for this year’s POWERGRID Conference. Addressing the issues surrounding the future of smart grids, this session will provide an overview of the evolving ideologies and challenges being faced in the various interconnected areas.

Chaired by Marco Janssen, President & CEO of UTInnovation, the IET Plenary will set the grounding for continued debate in the following conference sessions. Providing an update on the current European programme following the SmartGrids Technology Platform’s third report, the opening session will detail the strategic deployment for Europe’s future electricity networks. Dr. Eddie O’Connor, CEO of Mainstream Renewable Power, will then explore the future challenges for integrating intermittent power generation and the need for networks to evolve in order to achieve the EU’s 20% renewable energy targets.

We will then look at how demand side management and network optimisation will impact these targets. What technology exists and what roles will they play in the smart grids vision?

Rounding off the line up of leading speakers is Francois Nguyen from the International Energy Agency who will present their major findings on transmission investments in OECD member countries, including European cross-border investments. All the speakers will then join an industry panel session to answer questions.

Do you think the smart grid revolution is a realistic future? Do we have the capability to meet the needs of this vision? Join key players in this field to hear their views, discuss the opportunities and challenges and debate the realities of this revolution.
